A homoeopathic paediatrician, a counselling expert and a freelance writer are a few words to describe my profession. My sole aim is to put forth practical piece of information that guides every one right in the direction, blending the medicos to a layman with a simple gesture to make the medical things a little less convoluted and comprehendible.

Women all over the world eagerly wait for their periods to get over. This is especially true for those unfortunate women who suffer from abnormally heavy bleeding. Those few days when normally women lead a near about normal lifestyle, women suffering from heavy bleeding dare not venture outside from the fear of extreme discomfort. So, let us see what to do when you have heavy menstruation.

Possible Reasons for heavy menstrual flow

There could be many physical as well as psychological reasons for heavy menstruation such as hormonal imbalance, stress or even after recuperation from any latest wound or operation like abortion or a miscarriage. When you have heavy menstruation due to hormonal imbalance, it is mostly because of a variation in the levels of estrogen or progesterone hormone in the blood. The presence of fibroids in the uterus can also cause excessive bleeding.

What one needs to do?

Normally, you are clueless when you have heavy menstruation and hence do not do anything other than visiting the gynecologist.  However, there are a few steps that one can take to provide oneself with immediate relief. These steps would provide your body with temporary relief so that you can relax a bit.

  • Keep your legs on something which makes them stay at an elevated position.
  • Apply a pack of cold compress to your abdominal area to get relief.
  • Try to do deep breathing and relax yourself. Do not stress yourself on anything.
  • Do not try lifting heavy objects. This will put unnecessary pressure on the abdomen.
  • Avoid climbing stairs as it will aggravate the problem even more.

Preventing heavy menstruation

The above mentioned tips are only to provide you with some relief when you have heavy menstruation. But there are certainly other measures which you can adopt as a change in your overall lifestyle in order to lessen the problem of heavy menstruation.

  • Include a lot of fresh vegetables and choose nutritious options instead of junk food.
  • Try to have a healthier lifestyle including an exercise regime, devoid of smoking and drinking.
  • Consult a doctor in order to take multi-vitamins or a tonic for overall well - being.
  • Couple your iron supplements with Vitamin C tablets. Intake of Vitamin C helps the body in absorbing iron better as well as avoids constipation.
  • Drink lot of water or coconut water or even juices to keep your body hydrated.
  • Have adequate sleep and rest as much as you can.
  • Try to get a complete medical test done. You may never know why excessive bleeding is taking place.

When you have heavy menstruation, you know what to do. If you have a history of excessive bleeding, do not take it lightly. It could be much more than what it seems on a superficial level. Remember, if you are using more than 2-3 napkins in a span of just 2 hours, then it’s time to seek medical help immediately.
