Acute unilateral obstructive uropathy is a condition that results in sudden blockage of one of the ureters’ tubes. In the human body, ureters tube performs the important function of draining urine out from the kidneys. Normally, 1 people out of 1000 people get affected from the condition. The disease has alternative names also such as ureteral obstruction and obstructive uropathy-unilateral-acute.

Generally, it is observed that the disorder is mainly caused by the kidney stones. Other conditions like injury can cause result in the condition. Those people who have kidney stones, ureteral stones and tumors, and tumors in body parts like cervix, uterus, etc are more prone towards its risk. When urine does not able to pass from the body, it gets blocked into the kidneys. Due to this, kidney becomes swollen down and resulting condition is known as hydronephrosis.

Common symptoms experienced during acute unilateral obstructive uropathy include:
- Abnormal urine color (tea coloured, cola coloured)
- Fever
- Blood in the urine, foul smell in urine
- Urinary tract infection
- Frequency in urination
- Recent increase in the high blood pressure
- Abdominal pain in left or right quadrant
- Vomiting, nausea
A person may experience pain in the side or flank pain. If pain is experienced at one side, then there are chances that it may move to genitals, thigh, etc.
Acute unilateral obstructive uropathy can be prevented by following certain measures like drinking adequate amount of water (6-8 glasses) daily. Formation of calcium based kidney stone can be prevented by consuming diet high in citrate and low in sodium. However, it is advised to consult with the doctor immediately albeit taking the precautions, kidney stones persist.
